Bringing home a new baby is one of life's most beautiful and transformative seasons. The days are filled with sleepy snuggles, tiny stretches, endless feeding sessions, and moments that somehow feel both incredibly long and far too fleeting.
One of the things I love most about in-home newborn sessions is that there is very little you need to do to prepare.
These sessions aren't about creating a perfectly styled home or having a baby who sleeps the entire time. They're about documenting your family exactly as you are in this season — the love, connection, and quiet moments that make these early days so special.
Focus on Comfort, Not Perfection.
The biggest misconception I hear from parents is that their house needs to be spotless before I arrive.
I promise you—it doesn't.
When I walk into your home, I'm not looking at the pile of laundry in the corner or the dishes in the sink. I'm looking for beautiful natural light, meaningful spaces, and the way your family loves each other.
If there are any distracting items in the areas we'll be photographing, I can help move things around when I arrive. A quick tidy of the master bedroom, nursery, and living room is usually more than enough.
Dress Simply and Comfortably
The goal is to create timeless images that feel like you.
Neutral tones, soft textures, and coordinating colors photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your connection rather than your clothing.
Creams, beiges, soft browns, muted greens, dusty blues, and warm earth tones are always wonderful choices.
Most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable in. Newborn sessions often involve sitting, cuddling, feeding, and moving naturally with your baby, so comfort is key.
Don't Stress About Baby
Your baby does not need to sleep the entire session.
They don't need to be "good."
They don't need to follow any schedule.
Some babies sleep the whole time, while others stay awake and curious throughout the session. Both are beautiful.
If your little one needs feeding, changing, soothing, or extra cuddles, we'll simply pause and take the time they need. There is never any rush.
The most meaningful images often happen during these in-between moments.
Feed Baby Before the Session (If Possible)
If it works with your baby's schedule, try to feed them shortly before I arrive.
A full baby is often a content baby, but please don't stress if feeding times don't line up perfectly. We will have plenty of time throughout the session for additional feeds and breaks.
Keep the Temperature Comfortable
Newborns love warmth.
If possible, consider turning the heat up slightly before the session begins. This helps keep baby cozy, especially if we photograph them in lighter clothing, swaddles, or simply in your arms.
Trust the Process
You do not need to know how to pose.
You do not need perfectly behaved siblings.
You do not need a magazine-worthy home.
Your only job is to love on your baby.
Throughout the session, I'll gently guide you into natural interactions while leaving plenty of room for genuine moments to unfold. We'll capture the way your baby fits perfectly against your chest, the tiny fingers wrapped around yours, the sleepy cuddles on the couch, and all the little details that are already changing far too quickly.
These Days Won't Last Forever
The newborn stage can feel overwhelming while you're living it.
The sleepless nights, the constant feeding, the adjustment of becoming a family in a whole new way.
But one day, you'll look back and realize just how quickly it passed.
These photographs aren't just for today. They're for the years from now when your baby no longer fits in your arms, when the nursery has changed, and when these early days have become treasured memories.
The beauty of an in-home newborn session isn't perfection.
It's remembering exactly how it felt to love them when they were this little.
